Drivers of range shifts in female wild eastern chimpanzees (P. t. schweinfurthii) following female death events.

I’m excited to announce the first chapter of my dissertation has been accepted for publication in an upcoming edition of Animal Behaviour. The paper explores the influence female chimpanzee friendships have on habitat use and how ranging behavior changes after the loss of a close friend.

We found that after the death of stronger partners, female chimpanzees at Gombe moved away from areas they previously shared with a friend. For adult females, the loss of a mother or a daughter also came with the loss of habitat quality. Check back soon to read our thoughts on these results, why Gombe represents a unique place to study the dynamics of female bonds, and more!
